AN ITALIAN DAYDREAM WITH STUDIO AZZURO .

Posted by D.M

Italy is in the highlight today with the artistic collectif  STUDIO AZZURO !

Studio Azzuro  “Il nuotatore”  1984

“Everything seems at rest: a blue tinted atmosphere and an embracing sound track welcome the spectator. The monitors, placed side by side, are crossed by the repetitive and belaboured swim strokes of the swimmer as he moves tirelessly from one screen to another. The installation (synchronised using twenty four monitors and thirteen video programmes) was created using twelve video cameras lined along the edge of a swimming pool, flush with the surface of the water. We see a swimmer who, with repeated, laboured strokes, “moves across” each adjacent television screens. A hundred microevents (a falling ball, an anchor sinking down..) are inserted into the main scene, and remain relegated in the individual screens. It is through this alternation of events that the first live spectator participation in the installation is achieved, a trait that will later become a feature of Studio Azzurro’s work. The spectator is not required to follow a narrative thread. The spectator becomes a part of the event that unfolds in that particular instant and will never be the same again.”  Studio Azzuro

Studio Azzurro is an artistic studio from Milan, that focuses its research on the expressive potential of new Information Technologies. It was first set up in 1982 by Fabio Cirifino (photography), Paolo Rosa (visual arts and film) and Leonardo Sangiorgi (graphics and animation). In 1995 Stefano Roveda, an expert in interactive systems, joined the group. For over twenty years, Studio Azzurro has been investigating the poetic and expressive potential of technologies that have had such an impact on relations in this age. Through video-installations, sensitive and interactive environments, theatrical performances and films, it has blazed a trail that is now acknowledged worldwide. In addition to experimental work, the groups activities are also tied in with more formative experiences such as the designing of museums and theme exhibitions whose cultural value has been recognised at all levels. In both cases, Studio Azzurro has taken care to create communicative environments that require an active and significant participation on behalf of the spectator who is part of the narrative structure, inspired by a use of multi textual approach and a continuous shift between virtual and real elements.
